Laminate is a type of synthetic flooring that is made of many different materials that are fused together. Laminate flooring typically mimics the appearance of hardwood flooring. What sets these two flooring materials apart is cost. Although laminate flooring is not made purely of wood, it holds the same benefits and appearance of traditional hardwood flooring but is made from more cost-effective materials. Laminate flooring is durable, stain resistant, and mold resistant, which makes it perfect for high traffic areas and spaces with temperature fluctuation. We carry laminate flooring options from some of the best manufacturers, including:

  • Shaw
  • Moda Flooring & Interiors
  • Mannington
  • Pergo

While each of the above manufacturers creates their laminate flooring differently, there are five main components that go into composing laminate. Laminate is constructed in the following manner:

  1. Underlayment – Some laminate flooring must be installed over an underlayment such as foam or cork rolls. Some types of laminate flooring has this built into their structure. This will reduce noise and hollow sounds.
  2. Back Layer – To protect from water or moisture, laminate flooring has a bottom or back layer that creates a watertight seal around each plank.
  3. Fiberboard Core – This is the “meat” of laminate. This layer provides the strength, stability and depth of the laminate. It is comprised of a mixture of sawdust and wood chips that are finely grated, coated with resin and pressed into flat sheets. These sheets are layered to give the laminate the appearance of natural hardwood.
  4. Decorative Layer – This is the layer that gives laminate its wood-like appearance. This is created when a pattern or image is printed on a paper like substance that is embedded into resin.
  5. Top Wear Layer – The top layer of laminate is a clear coat that makes the surface resistant to scratches and wear and tear.
